Overview
It is not by chance that Lake Tisza is considered a true bird paradise: countless islands, backwaters and shallow channels alternate with vast open spaces where “water is the master”. It’s a veritable heaven for wetland birds, with protected nesting sites inaccessible from land and an endless source of food.
Join us in a fairy-tale world of unspoilt nature, in complete comfort and safety: in a cosy, small-group setting, with a guide who has vast knowledge and local expertise.
Unlike our popular full-day canoe trip, this shorter, motorised boat trip is ideal for those who can’t swim or who don’t want to paddle for hours in a canoe, but still want to discover the hidden wonders of the lake’s wildlife. Not having to paddle is also a big advantage (and safer) for those who want to capture their experiences with a camera or mobile phone.
Lake Tisza (officially the Kisköre reservoir), the second largest body of water in Hungary, was artificially created by the construction of the Kisköre water step to prevent flooding and to better supply water to the agricultural areas of the region. The reservoir, originally designed to have a larger capacity, was not completed in all its phases, creating shallow, island-like bodies of water that have provided fantastic conditions for the development of a rich
wildlife: hundreds of bird species have found peaceful nesting grounds and abundant food sources.
Lake Tisza has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and is a strictly protected natural value.
Our tour takes us to a bird sanctuary, accessible only by water, which is only visitable with a guide and subject to conditions, where you can see everything from wading birds to birds of prey and songbirds, even beavers if we are lucky.
Lake Tisza is home, food and shelter for over 200 species of birds and a popular resting place for migrating birds.
Our guide is an expert on this special world. We recommend this tour to anyone who loves birds, wants to learn about the sounds of birds, their breeding habits or their migrations.
Bird-watching sites have been set up on the smaller islands of the lake, near the nesting sites, and we will visit several of these, and with the professional binoculars provided by our tour guide, we will be able to take in even more of the fabulous world around us than we would be able to with the naked eye.
Our tour guide, Balázs Kiss, is a renowned nature conservationist, an experienced hiking guide and expert on Lake Tisza and the Hortobágy, formerly a staff member of the Hortobágy Bird Hospital, who works with heart and soul to promote and protect our natural treasures.
The tours last about 3 hours and depart from the harbour every Saturday from the beginning of May until the end of September at 9.00 am and 13.00 pm.
With our guide, you will explore the most exciting parts of the Lake Tisza bird reserve in a low-powered (quiet) motorboat and observe the lake’s rich, untouched wildlife, unique in Europe, from almost arm’s length.
